Getting a dent in your car is not a fun experience. In just a second, your sweet ride can go from gorgeous to a metal mess that requires a lot of money and time to fix. A dent in your bumper or car door is a common occurrence, often caused by another vehicle's door or while someone is parking. When you get a dent in your car you may not have the time or resources to repair it right away, but you want to make sure you protect the area from further damage, rust, and paint chipping. Here are ways you can protect a dent in your car so it doesn't get worse while you wait for a time to repair.

Pull the dent out as much as you can

A suction dent remover is excellent for smaller dents that have not cracked or torn the meta part of your vehicle. You can buy cheap varieties of these units at your local auto parts store. While you may not be able to remove all the dent yourself, you can minimize it enough where you can keep it from getting worse or causing your paint to chip.

Spray rust repellent on it

If the dent has scraped into the metal exterior of your vehicle, you can expose the surface to rust and moisture damage. Keep rust at bay by applying a rust repellent spray or solution to the dented area. Read the label on your rust repellent prior to use to make sure it won't damage existing paint when applied.

Cover the dent with plastic

A dent that is on your door, bumper, or fender is a dent that can get worsened by having the exact same thing happen again. Since these are prone accident areas on your car, you want to protect a current dent from even more damage by covering it with plastic like the kind used in protecting floors while painting. You can then apply duct tape to keep the plastic in place. A small amount of gasoline applied to the tape residue will remove it later, or you can have an auto body and paint specialist remove it for you.

When you get a dent in your car, you want to do what you can to keep the area safe until you can get the offending blemish repaired by a professional. Taking these measures can help preserve the quality of your car's exterior longer.
